Since earlier 2008, international nickel and cobalt prices had fluctuated sharply, the completely different scenery compared with the past years. Moreover, domestic producers, consumers and traders in nickel and cobalt industry are faced by greater operating pressures resulted from uncomfortable international financial situation since the beginning of this year, tight monetary policy from state government, Renminbi appreciation, higher labor cost and so on. Currently, nickel, cobalt and stainless steel markets were also slack even in peak season.
Many factors have resulted in volatile nickel and cobalt prices, including demand fundamentals, the policies change from raw material export countries, and in-negligible investment fund. And just due to fluctuant raw material prices, raw material market supply has been increasing substantially, and meanwhile consumers have to adjust product mix or try to seek cheaper substitutes. So, the emerging production of nickel pig iron (NPI) once satisfied demand from some stainless steel producers, now has been faced by more and more problems. And the consumption from battery and plating industries has been restricted by high nickel price. For cobalt industry, market demand has not been radically depressed just because high cobalt price even happened in the past, but uncertain factors from the exports of African countries still dominated market tendency. And the frequent adjustment of export rebate policy from state government aiming to decrease foreign exchange reserve has also resulted in great influence on nickel and cobalt market.
